Some people said the name of Singkawang city was came from the name of some plant “Tengkawang” we can be found those plant in tropical forest. According China Version Singkawang came from Sau Kew Jong, which means “the town which lies between Sea, springhead, mountain and river”
They’re (Tionghoa) not over excessive, why not ? because from west side Singkawang bordering with Natuna Sea, From South Singkawang bordering with Roban Mountain, Pasi Mountain, Raya Mountain, and Poteng Mountain, meanwhile from Middle side Singkawang has a river which flowing to the Natuna Sea.

The tatung ceremony was lead by priest, He was deliberately brings the spirit of a deceased person to possess Tatung. Those are spirit of kind person, they believe those spirit will be able to ward off evil spirits who want to disrupt the harmony of life. Most of spirit are the Heroes people of China legend, seems like warlords, judges, poets, princes, prostitutes who have repented and other saints.
It was not easy to become Tatung, because each person have to feasting as long three days before occasion day.
In Tatung attraction every people who has possessed by spirit will doing many kind of acting with strangely. Seems like eating live chicken then they will drink that chicken blood meanwhile there was people who stepping sword or knife.
In Singkawang there are many native people or Dayak who become Tatung, too. Because, they thought tatung its seems like Dayak Ceremony, Between Chinese and Dayak has a tight brotherhood. And it was happen since Chinese people came to Singkawang at first time
